Life Coaching / TherapyMyth 5 – How do I find the right one for me?

Once you have successfully unveiled the truth from all myths surrounding personal coaching and therapy it will lead you to the quintessential question of how do I find the right life coach/therapist for me?

In this final part of the series I share important tips about picking a  life coach, should you ever find yourself in need of one. Guess what; entering “find life coach” into your google search window results in about 124,000,000 results. There are a lot of coaches and therapists out there, but finding the right one for you is what makes all the difference.

Here are my top 3 tips on finding a life coach/therapist just right for you.

Research – Ask friends, family and use the web

Asking people you trust for recommendations is a great place to start. This could be a friend, family member, colleague or other health professionals. If someone you trust can make a referral, this can act as a pre-screening process. If you have a friend or family member who is a life coach or therapist, they would also be a good person to ask. If none of your friends or family are able to help then shop online. When shopping for life coaches look for individuals who are not selling themselves but rather seem to be trying to tell you about their work and their philosophy of working with clients.

Reach out – Make a connection

See if the life coach you are interested in offers a free (phone/in person) consultation. This provides an opportunity for you to ask questions and get a general “feel” of the therapist. During this time you can ask important questions about their coaching interventions and treatment philosophy, how they have worked to help others and how they feel they can help you, or any other important questions you may have. Whether over the phone or in person; when you finish you may wish to assess howcomfortable you felt, if you felt the coach was sincere, and if you feel you could be honest without feeling judged or criticized.

Here are some questions that you may ask:

·         What is their training? Where did they go to school? Do they hold a current license to practice? Credentials aren’t everything but when asking this; you just want to make sure that their license is in good standing and their school/training accredited, not a one day workshop.

·         What is their specialty? What is their experience? There are many different schools of thought in coaching and therapy and each practitioner approaches challenges differently based on their training and theoretical orientation. For example, Time Line Therapy® (TLT®) is treatment at an unconscious level and allows a client to surrender negative emotions linked to past experiences and transform their internal programming. While NLP is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy which believes all learning, behavior and change is unconscious. There are many different ways to approach the same issue, and while you may have no idea specifically what style you want or need, make sure that what the coach/therapist is proposing is something that sounds aligned to your personality and needs.

If you are seeing a life coach for a particular issue or goal, look for coaches who have experience in that or similar areas. Share a little about your presenting issue and see how the s/he responds. Experienced coaches explain how they can help, are able to give you a basic “road map,” to their approach and an indication of how you will know when sessions/therapy is finished.

  • If at the end of the consultation you choose to go ahead find out their fee structure and discuss if you need sliding scale or if you are planning on using insurance. If you like everything about them but their professional fees are too high for you, tell them that. Often times, they work out an installment plan or a pay as you go payment structure.

Relationship before resume – Notice how you feel

Don’t be overly focused on finding someone with a long list of accomplishments. Just because a coach/therapist has written several books or has a busy public speaking schedule, it doesn’t mean that they are the right fit for you. Research has found that the most effective ones build strong therapeutic relationships with their clients and have highly developed interpersonal skills including warmth, acceptance, empathy and the ability to accurately identify how a client is feeling. So give more weight to how you feel in the room with the coach/therapist, rather than their mantle of certificates and awards.

In conclusion; finding a life coach and/or therapist should not be a rushed decision. It should take a little bit of time and effort. By remaining open, honest, and willing to receive help, the process andoutcomes can be very productive, beneficial as well as frequently life altering. As Milton Erickson would say; “A Therapist is like the weather; they provide a climate for change.”

Life Coaching/Therapy Myth #4

Have you gone through a phase in life when you thought you need the guidance and expertise of a therapist?Andthen you just shook your head and said, ‘Yes, but therapy is so expensive.’

People often look for quick-fixes instead of therapy for financial reasons. Like that, that cigarette puff which gives you a fake sense of calm, that shoe on sale which replaces your stress with style, that random intimate encounter which makes you feel momentarily wanted, popping those pills which lull you off to sleep or that ‘one more for the road’ drink with the guys which makes you forget it all. However I’d like to propose a question for you here; Therapy is expensive; as compared to what?

For me, it was a personal investment. I spent five years learning and trying every new theory and therapy during a time in my life when I couldn’t afford it. There was pain from my past that I knew I needed to address, and for me it warranted using my credit card and working two jobs. Now, I’m not surely encouraging you to do the same—that’s a decision only you can make. But my view is that good coaching/therapy is worth the time and money. There is greater cost for not doing the inner work to improve the quality of your life. When you consider how your well-being – or lack of it – will impact your relationships, health, career success, and overall life satisfaction, personal life coaching and/or therapy is an investment clearly worth making.

MYTH: Life Coaching and Therapy is expensive, I can’t afford it.

FACT:Yes, seeing a life coach or therapist often can get expensive. Yet when you think about price, what’s the cost of not going for it? Your relationship/marriage?Your job performance? Think about how your distress may conflict with your work, relationships or your life and then make a decision about pricing.

It is also true that you don’t have to always pay top dollar for expert help. Yet people are hesitant about entering a client-coach relationshipin order to prioritize their own well-being and let the cost be an excuse for not getting help.

Health insurance companies often provide some mental health coverage, but whether a coach or therapist takes insurance or not varies. If they don’t, many offer sliding fee scales based on income for people who need help but can’t afford it.Most of usaspire to make a positive difference in people lives. They are do-gooders and want to help people, so if someone needs care but can’t afford it, you can usually work towards an installment payment structure which is best suited to your financial position. Thereafter it is just a question of budgeting and prioritizing. Sometimes professionals also provide mental health services for free or at a reduced fee on certain days or hours of business as a gesture of gratitude and giving back to the community at-large.

In conclusion; the long term cost of not getting the help one needs can be high. You may think why should I pay someone to be nice to me and care for me? I can get that for free from a loved one. However, there is huge difference between a life coach or therapist and your family/loved ones. What you pay for is their time, expertise and commitment to your success – the caring infact is for free.

Life Coaching/Therapy Myth #3

Life Coaching or Therapy is a pseudo-science, all mumbo jumbo!

Imagine this. You’ve lost your job and your career seems to be going nowhere. Your finances are a serious worry and the daily charades of life seem to wear you out. Your relationship status stands at messed up and you are up close and personal with an identity crisis. Mental health challenges have manifested into physical ailments. Depressed and anxious you struggle to stand strong against these extremely trying times. You seem to have tried it all; fought your illness with medications and your mind with will power. You even prayed every day for God to relent and cut you some slack. Yet you just cannot get a grip on things and like bone china you seem to be slowly crumbling apart.

MYTH: Life coaching and Therapy is a pseudo-science, all mumbo-jumbo!

FACT: Now hopefully (and thankfully) you may or may not be going through all of the above all at the same time, however take one or a combination of any two and you still have a pretty hard battle ahead. At such a point of time someone you know directs you to – a Life Coach; a Therapist.

Desperate for a resurrection you eagerly listen, go through several testimonials and then – wait a minute; you stop dead in your tracks. Why? Because you wonder, you are terribly concerned and you absolutely have to know if life coaching/therapy is a pseudo-science before giving it a shot. Seriously, do you really need scientific evidence to convince yourself to take a chance at success?

No, I hear you say.

Then what is that which is truly stopping you? Are you afraid of trying all over again? Are you scared to commit to your success after a series of bouts with failure? Are you overwhelmed by the diversity of practitioners out there? How do you go about finding a reliable life coach/therapist?  Are you skeptical of the financial and emotional investment? These would be more appropriate questions. For honestly having been there, done that myself the last thing on my mind was the placebo effect or any such scientific predicament. It was instead lack of clarity on the above. So I took the first step. The decision to do it. The rest followed suit with the help of some dedicated research on available life coaches in my area, holistic practitioners and their references.

Having said that it’s ok to be concerned about the subject, after all it has the possibility to bring about great results. Often people think that life coaches or therapists choose to disregard science and instead like to think of it as an art. But this common critique of the profession is filled with misunderstandings and errors that lead people away from a deeper understanding of the complexities that exist in the development and delivery of evidence-based mental-health care. Let’s take a look at some reasons why individuals often do not receive coaching/therapy based solely on what science says to do.

Truth and Science:

Let’s talk about what science is not. Science is not the same as truth. Science is just a method that moves us towards the truth. The amount of effective interventions we have yet to uncover through research will eventually dwarf what we have figured out thus far. Therefore it would be safe to conclude that scientific studies that do exist are full of limitations and likelihood that what is currently termed as a pseudo-science be proved as a scientific cure/breakthrough at a later date.

Generalizations and Science:

We all know that science generalizes in order to conclude. The problem with research studies is that they isolate various mental health issues whilst weighing them against a sizable randomized norm so as to come to an evidence-based conclusion. However how often are two people alike? How often are our models of the world identical in nature? Also for example; how often does a person suffer from obesity only, without it being linked to a lack of self-worth or any other limiting belief? What happens when a client approaches a life coach or therapist with multiple issues? Should the life coach explain to the client that while we do have a scientifically proven treatment for obesity, we don’t yet have an evidence-based treatment protocol for combined challenges? Please come back a few decades later? Obviously not. And so we use our expertise to tailor an individualized coaching plan best suited to the client history and current circumstances. Would this be what you refer to as mumbo-jumbo?

Rapport and Science:

We must consider the role of the rapport between client and coach/therapist as a potential variable that influences the outcomes of coaching and therapy. Surely that’s not the only thing that’s needed. No coach/therapist is sitting around sipping iced tea and making friendship bands with their clients. But a good therapeutic relationship is necessary and a key ingredient that helps people succeed. A skilled coach or therapist can help create a safe and comfortable environment to rebuild one’s capacity to overcome and triumph. I wonder if we’ll ever be able to measure how the client-coach/therapist rapport contributes to the healing process. I hope we do but what if we don’t? Does that mean it’s therefore not part of what makes coaching and therapy useful?

In conclusion; evidence-based treatments are absolutely the backbone of what coaches and practitioners should be using to help people. It is great to know that various colleagues in academia continue to work tirelessly to find evidence-based treatments for those seeking help. We need those scientists working for us all, and science will certainly contribute to our deepening understanding of psychological function and dysfunction. But right now, let’s admit it; we just don’t have all the answers…as yet.

And so for now I will continue to work tirelessly to help individuals, using everything I have in my arsenal. That includes evidence-based practices, knowledge, skill, empathy and staying committed with those, fully aware that we perhaps don’t have all the answers but continue to have the conviction and faith that together we will surely move towards wellness and growth.

Life coaching Myth # 2

Do you believe a life coach will fix you?

You are driving down the highway and all of a sudden your car stalls and swerves. You struggle to keep control and just about manage to get the car to come to a grinding halt. Yikes! Something is wrong with your car.

What’s next? When there is a problem with your car, you take it to a mechanic to get it fixed. You take it to an expert.

What about when you are feeling unwell? You go to the experts; life coaches. But you are not a car and you cannot be fixed.

For Life coaching to work, you need to be an active participant, bringing your expertise about what life is like for you. The best solutions and insights will come from you, with the coach acting more like a skilled and knowledgeable facilitator, guiding the process. Coaches do not fix you and they do not tell you what to do, how to walk, talk, think, and feel. And thank heavens for that! Can you imagine being dependent on a coach to tell you how to live?

MYTH:Life Coaches are experts. They will fix me.

FACT: If only this were true! A qualified coach is there to guide you through your challenges and coaching is an experience where you can feel relieved that you are not alone with your problems, there is a qualified and proficient individual who is there to guide and direct you to success.

Working with a coach can be compared to working with a physical trainer. Although a trainer can provide an inspirational structure for change, helping the client to identify specific goals and suggest a regime to achieve them, it is always up to the client to make use of the tools provided.

Coaching can be similarly overwhelming at first. Initially you may not even notice the results. You wonder when you will see the new changed you. It is common to feel a bit worse before you feel better, but if you stick with the process, let go of old habits, and rework some perceptions, soon enough you have your mind and body functioning better than ever.

Coaching does require you to work and does not always provide an immediate sense of relief. You may confront feelings, thoughts, memories or personal insights that are uncomfortable, even painful. These experiences result in you wanting to make changes in your beliefs, values, habits or behaviors that may make you uncomfortable at first.  Yet with time and effort they will result in a happier healthier you.

In that sense life coaching is a lot of hard work—a process more akin to going to the gym than going to the spa.

Ultimately the responsibility for change rests with you. The coach will not provide you with a psychological blueprint of who you are. The coach’s role is to provide a safe and comfortable environment along with a trusting relationship where questions can be addressed. Coaches will not often give advice, but rather, help you to understand the conflicts within you that make it difficult for you to make your own decisions. Of course there are a-ha moments and revelations during sessions, but for change to really happen and last, the majority of the work happens between (and after) sessions. With your coach’s help, you work towards your goals, decide on a plan for growth and change, and then practice the new behaviors not only during the sessions but most importantly out in the real world.

In the long run, the goals of coaching are for people to develop more awareness, gain more self-insight, and make the most of their strengths and abilities thereby creating a new compelling future ahead.

People like:

  • Taasha made the big move – quit her job and relocated across continents to move forward with the relationship of her dreams.
  • Sarah is using the tools and techniques that she learned to close deals in her new Sales Manager role.
  • Neil left a successful career with the aviation industry to follow his passion and is now a successful fashion photographer.

Life Coaching MYTH No.1- Going to a life coach means I am weak.

It is usually true, that most individuals who practice life coaching started out needing it themselves. I vouch for this to be a fact. My journey in the world of self-improvement began years ago purely based on necessity. I didn’t stumble upon it, wasn’t introduced to itby eager friends over a breezy afternoon, there was no bolt of lightning that struck me in a dream and told me this is what I am meant to do. No! There was no such magical initiation.

I was going through a rough phase in life; it was as if I had lost control of how I chose to live. I was remote controlled by my circumstances, lonely, low and lost in the maze of life…

Mental health challenges affect millions of people around the world. Unfortunately, misconceptions about therapy often discourage people from seeking help. They also contribute to the stigma surrounding mental health issues, and prevent people from learning more about or utilizing the services of trained professionals. Many people have a perception of therapists and life coaches that doesn’t quite match up to reality. If you think it means lying on a couch with a box of tissues and paying top dollar to talk to someone who doesn’t quite get it, or that it’s like the reality TV shows where you are openly and publicly blamed and shamed as the host confronts you, please think again.

Life Coaching is not so. In order to expose the facts and spread awareness we will be addressing some of the most common myths over a series of articles based on debunking the misconceptions surrounding Life Coaching. The truth will set you free.

MYTH:Going to a life coach means I am weak, (less of a man/woman) mentally ill or crazy.

FACT:Asking for help is not a weakness.

Think of these other scenarios. Are people “weak” when they pay for tuition classes to improve academically? What about when they are sick, maybe with a cough of a cold? Are they weak to see the GP? It is not a weakness to recognize that certain areas of our well-being are less than and we need professional help.

Researchers continue to find new links emphasizing the value of taking equal, if not more, care of mental health to ensure good physical health. This is often referred to as the mind-body health connection.

Emotional challenges can show up as physical symptoms. When we are physically unwell over prolonged periods of time, we may also develop emotional issues. Sadly, having emotional or cognitive concerns is often seen as a moral failing or character flaw.

Men are especially stereotyped, making it harder for them to seek help. Men don’t cry. Men don’t talk about feelings. Men need to have it all figured out.

Seeking help for your problems means you are taking action and being responsible. It is gender-neutral. Asking for help requires more courage than remaining passively stuck. Getting help is actually a sign of resourcefulness and strength.

Many people who seek life coaches are “normal” people, people like you and me, suffering from very “normal” everyday life stressors. We all face difficult times, anxiety, and even depression at some point or another. People go to therapy to cope with school, careers, relationships, disorders, stress, and grief or just to figure out who they are and learn to live the life they desire, to live life to the fullest. Sometimes people see coaches to seek an outside perspective of a difficult situation.

Consider this – if personal life coaching did not help better lives significantly, why would top athletes, successful executives, and celebrities have coaches, mentors, and other such professionals? Bottom line is that there is no shame in wanting a better life.

So one day, there I was, reluctantly attending a family get-together. As everyone enthusiastically smiled for the camera, I barely managed a feeble smile. A week later, when a copy of the group photo was mailed to us, I sat there looking at the person in the picture. I was stunned. Is that really me? I could not recognize who I had become. It was then that a small voice in my head said, “You are everything you choose to be.”

I chose that day to salvage myself and reclaim my life. And I did! I learned and tried every new theory, therapy, and home remedy suggested to me. Committed to the journey of self-discovery and improvement, I left no stone unturned.

Today, I am here simply asking you this – are YOU everything YOU choose to be?

What?!Life Coaching?!?Certainly not for me.

If you are one of those ardent critiques of the new age of holistic health and well-being, then you will be undeniably surprised to know that ‘life coaching’ is the new wellness mantra! My best friend Susan quit her job and started her own business, Leila got over her failed relationship and was looking forward to finding love again, Steven overcame his phobia for creepy crawly insects, George started exceeding his sales targets and Mariam was able to get rid of her addiction to cola. These are just a few of the people who have tried and tested different genres of therapy and coaching only to successfully manage change in their lives.

The dictionary defines a life coach as: an advisor who helps people make decisions, set and reach goals, or deal with problems. Ref:

In that sense then, life coaching today is much more than being limited to the traditional conceptof it being associated with a ‘treatment’ of some kind or ‘psychotherapy.’Life coaching today falls under a wide spectrum of any practice that acts as an educative and motivational tool in promoting one’s overall well-being by driving positive change.

Professional coaches today use a variety of tools and techniques helping individuals overpower challenges, achieve goals, thereby facilitating a process to lead a prosperous, balanced and healthy lifestyle, one which we all wish and want. Most coaches use a combination of different techniques to optimize maximum results and ensure success. You do have a financial obligation, however the investment you make in yourself aids commitment and has long term benefits; in the bigger picture it’s a small price to pay.

However those of you who are still skeptical of whether you should or should not, whether you can afford to or not, whether it really works or not, whether it’s best for you or not?! Whatever your reasons are here are 3’Do it yourself’ techniques which you can use in order to help deal and defeat common problems.

  • When you feel sad, low and unhappy or down: Do the opposite. If you’re feeling down literally look up. When we are feeling sad or low we tend to look internally; as a result you unconsciously look down which only makes you feel worse. E.g. dropped head when one is crying.  The next time you are feeling unhappy; look up and notice the immediate difference to your mood/outlook.
  • When you feel stressed, overwhelmed, out of options, possibilities and/or for universal well-being: Reframe! Reframe! Reframe! Axe out negative phrases and statements from your everyday life. Stop and rephrase them with a positive spin on the words you use out aloud or even when in internal dialogue with yourself. Our thoughts determine our reality. When we stop thinking about what we don’t want or can’t do and begin thinking about what we do want and can do; our day/life begins to transform.Instead of working against our desires and intentions, we move into alignment with them. For e.g.: “I am a bad person; I have such an ugly past” to “I am such a wise person; I have learnt so much from my past.”
  • When you feel nervous, anxious, tense or edgy: Focus/stare at a particular point on the ceiling, directly up and above from where you are standing. Whilst staring at a fixed point inhale deeply and exhale fully, minimum of three times to feel instantly calmer, relaxed and more in control of the incident/event.

These are quick tips and if used repeatedly, in time will become an unconscious habit leaving you feeling energized, confident and in control. You may find that you resonate with some more than the others and that is only natural. One of the advantages of the existing and newly emerging forms of therapyisthe vastreservoir of techniques to choose from. Seek and select that which is supportive towards your growth and assists you in moving forward to positively alter the course of your life.

The question then could be; what kind of life coaching best suits me?! And the answer largely lies in; which life coach works best for you!

Hypnotherapy with Tasneem Kagalwalla

Hypnosis is the epitome of mind-body medicine. It can enable the mind to tell the body how to react, and modify the messages that the body sends to the mind.” – New York Times

So what is Hypnosis? Here’s the truth about Hypnosis.

When you hear the word hypnosis, you may picture the mysterious hypnotist figure popularized in movies, comic books and television. This ominous, goateed man waves a pocket watch back and forth, guiding his subject into a semi-sleep, zombie-like state. Once hypnotized, the subject is compelled to obey, no matter how strange or immoral the request. Muttering “Yes, master,” the subject does the hypnotist’s evil bidding.

This popular representation bears little resemblance to actual hypnotism. In fact, modern understanding of hypnosis contradicts this conception on several key points. Subjects in a hypnotic trance are not slaves to their “masters” they have absolute free will. And they’re not really in a semi-sleep state — they’re actually hyper attentive. It is generally accepted that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.

A relaxed, focused state of concentration. That is the definition. But the actual state of hypnosis is a little harder to define. Until recently it was assumed that it was similar to sleep, or that the mind was somehow unconscious. In reality, there is a specific state that the brain enters into when it is receptive to suggestion. This has been discovered on scans during hypnosis. It is not an unusual state of mind, and may feel like you are in a trance, or in hypnosis. For most people they simply feel relaxed. There is a change in the brain wave activity, similar to that time just before sleep when the alpha state is entered. Your brain’s waking state is a beta brain wave, just as you are going to sleep it changes to alpha and then to delta and theta in deep sleep. The alpha state is a very dreamy, pleasant state. During this time the mind is very open to visualizations and creating a rich sensory experience. The more real the experience becomes in the subconscious mind during this state, the more effect it will have on your waking behavior.

Can Hypnosisor a hypnotherapistmake me do something against my will? Absolutely not. This is probably the biggest myth of all. During a hypnosis session you would instantly get up and leave the room if it caught on fire, even if had previously felt like your arms and leg were too heavy to move. Stage hypnotists seem to make people do strange things while hypnotized, but the truth is that these people are doing these things because they have a desire to be outrageous. They are willing participants. You will never do anything, or accept any suggestion that violates your morals or values.

So how does it work?

Hypnotherapy allows you to:

  • Discover the power & potential of your unconscious mind
  • Learn how to induce trance easily
  • Discover how to use the power of suggestion positively

We are constantly hypnotizing ourselves. I think that sometimes we are our own worst enemy, when we call ourselves names, or put ourselves down and reinforce fears and limitations. It can get to be a habit if you do it long enough.

What can happen if I allow this to happen?

So, imagine what might happen if you just changed your suggestions that you give yourself on a daily basis?

What if you could let your mind easily change the way you feel about something you used to be afraid of? Or have more confidence? Or feel calm and relaxed almost instantly. You have the power to make your brain happy or sad, afraid or confident, healthy or sick.

Hypnotherapy aims to re-program patterns of behavior within the mind, enabling irrational fears, phobias, negative thoughts and suppressed emotions to be overcome enabling you take an active role on making a positive change in the belief systems.
